John Hutchison will lead this full-day carpool trip to birding locations in southern Broward County. Meet at 8:00 AM at Markham Park’s Meadow Nature Trail. From I-75, exit at Royal Palm Parkway (Exit 15). Drive west 0.5 miles to Weston Road. Turn right and drive west 2.8 miles to the park entrance. From I-595, exit at 136 Street (Exit 1A) and drive west 2.0 miles on SR 84 (I-595 service road) to the park entrance. Turn left after the entrance station (fee) to reach the nature trail parking area, opposite the dog park. Bring lunch. Bathrooms available at numerous locations.
Our target birds will be early migrant species, snail kite, swamp hen, wood duck, burrowing owl.
Plan for an early lunch here at Markham Park, then we will continue to our second stop, Long Key Nature Center, Davie.
Directions: Exit the park and cross under I-595. Turn left onto SR-84. Go approximately 2 miles and turn right onto Flamingo Rd. It is not well marked, but there is a Cumberland Farms store on the right. Go approximately 2 miles then turn right onto 36th Court (opposite entrance to Flaming Gardens). Nature Center will be 200 yards down the road on the left. We will be walking approximately 3.5 miles at a slow pace.
Lastly we take a trip into Ft. Lauderdale to Evergreen Cemetery, off SE 15th St.(Turn at Boston Market. Target bird is black-throated grey warbler.
